Where to Sleep on the 2-Day Inca Trail with Camping

The 2-day Inca Trail is an alternative for those who want to hike part of the original trail to Machu Picchu without doing the classic four-day trek. Although the route is shorter, it still offers the chance to spend a night camping surrounded by nature.

Unlike the Classic Inca Trail, where you sleep for three nights in different mountain areas, this option includes just one night of camping before returning to Machu Picchu on the morning of the second day.

Where do you sleep on the 2-day Inca Trail?

On our 2-day Inca Trail with camping itinerary, the night is spent in the Puente Ruinas area, located in the Urubamba River valley and very close to Machu Picchu.

After completing the first day’s hike, travelers descend to this area to rest in tents and recharge before returning to Machu Picchu the following morning.

Approximate altitude: 1,900 m above sea level

Puente Ruinas is at a lower altitude than many sections of the Inca Trail. Its surroundings feature abundant vegetation, mountains, and the nearby Urubamba River.

After several hours hiking along Inca trails, stone stairways, and cloud forest areas, arriving at the campsite offers a change of pace and the opportunity to enjoy a quieter night in the heart of nature.

What is it like to spend the night in Puente Ruinas?

The experience is different from staying in a hotel in Aguas Calientes. Here, the night is part of the adventure: you sleep in a tent in a natural setting very close to Machu Picchu.

The weather in this area is usually warmer and more humid than at campsites located in the higher sections of the Inca Trail. However, temperatures can drop at night, so it is always advisable to keep a warm layer handy.

How do you get to the 2-day Inca Trail campsite?

The day begins at Km 104, one of the access points to the Short Inca Trail. From there, the hike begins and you visit some of the most important archaeological sites on this version of the route.

From Km 104 to Wiñay Wayna

After entering the trail, one of the first places you visit is Chachabamba. From this area, the ascent begins through vegetation and mountains until reaching Wiñay Wayna.

Wiñay Wayna is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites on the Inca Trail. Its terraces built into the hillside and its location within the forest make it one of the most anticipated stops of the trek.

From Wiñay Wayna to Inti Punku

The route continues to Inti Punku, known as the Sun Gate. This ancient entrance marks one of the most special moments of the trek, as this area offers a panoramic view of Machu Picchu.

After enjoying the scenery, you continue descending along the trail until you approach the Inca city.

From Machu Picchu to Puente Ruinas

At the end of the first day’s hike, the route continues to the Puente Ruinas area, where the campsite is located.

This is where a day that combines archaeological sites, cloud forest, stone paths, and the first view of Machu Picchu comes to an end.

How do you sleep during the 2-day Inca Trail?

The night is spent in a tent prepared for resting after the hike. With our camping service, the team takes care of organizing the necessary equipment so travelers do not have to carry all the gear along the route.

Tents for Resting

After hiking for several hours, having the campsite ready allows travelers to change clothes, organize their belongings, and rest.

The tents provide a sheltered space to sleep and spend the night before starting the second day.

Dining Area

The camping experience also includes an area for meals. At the end of the hike, being able to sit down and share a hot drink or dinner becomes one of the most enjoyable moments of the day.

It is also the ideal time to talk with the guide about the visit to Machu Picchu planned for the following morning.

Is it cold at night on the 2-day Inca Trail?

Puente Ruinas is located at approximately 1,900 meters above sea level, so conditions are different from those at the higher-altitude campsites on the 4-day Inca Trail.

The environment can feel warm and humid during part of the day, although temperatures may drop at night.

What to Bring for a More Comfortable Night’s Sleep

You do not need to carry an overly large backpack, but it is useful to bring a few personal items to stay comfortable during the night.

Recommended Clothing for the Campsite

  • A lightweight warm layer.
  • A change of clothes for the second day.
  • Dry, comfortable socks.
  • Waterproof jacket or rain poncho.
  • Basic personal hygiene items.
  • Insect repellent.

It is also advisable to keep your personal belongings organized before going to sleep, as the second day starts early.

What happens after sleeping in Puente Ruinas?

The second day begins in the morning. After breakfast and packing your backpack, you leave the campsite and head back to Machu Picchu.

One advantage of sleeping near the citadel is that the journey to Machu Picchu is much shorter than returning to Cusco after the first day.

Visit Machu Picchu on the Second Day

Once at Machu Picchu, you take the corresponding guided visit, following the circuit assigned on your entry ticket.

In this way, the first day is mainly dedicated to hiking the Inca Trail and reaching Machu Picchu through Inti Punku, while the second day allows you to focus on exploring the Inca city in greater detail.
