Is the Inca Trail open all year round?

Yes, except during the month of February, when the route closes for maintenance and because it is the heaviest rainy season.

Can you do the Inca Trail without an agency?

No. As it is a protected route, it can only be accessed through an authorized travel agency licensed to operate on the Inca Trail.

How far in advance do you have to reserve?

The ideal is to book 6 or 7 months in advance, especially if you plan to go between May and August, which is the most popular season.

What minimum age is needed?

There is no official age limit, but it is recommended that participants be between 8 and 65 years old and in good physical condition. If in doubt, consult your doctor before booking the tour.

What is the alternative if there is no availability?

The Salkantay Trek (5 days) is the most popular and well-rated alternative. Lares, Choquequirao and Inca Jungle are also available.

How difficult is the walk?

The 4-day Inca Trail has moderate-high difficulty. The most demanding point is the Dead Woman Pass at 4,215 meters above sea level. It is recommended to arrive with some prior physical training.
