Machu Picchu Entry Included with the Inca Trail: Circuits and Schedules

One of the most common questions before booking the Inca Trail is how entry to Machu Picchu works. Many travelers want to know whether it is included in the trek, which circuit they will be able to visit, and what time they will enter the Inca citadel.

Entry is arranged as part of the booking made through an authorized agency. However, access is subject to a specific route, a limited number of spaces, and a pre-confirmed schedule.

Is entry to Machu Picchu included?

Yes. Visitors who hike the Inca Trail Network and continue to Machu Picchu have entry spaces reserved specifically for hikers.

These spaces must be booked and paid for in advance through an authorized agency. Therefore, when you book an Inca Trail program, the agency takes care of arranging both the permit for the trek and the corresponding ticket to enter Machu Picchu.

You do not need to make a second booking on your own for the visit included in the itinerary. The date, route, and schedule must appear in the documentation confirmed by the agency.

Where do hikers arrive?

Inca Trail travelers arrive at Machu Picchu on foot through the Intipunku sector, also known as the Sun Gate.

On the Classic Inca Trail, this arrival takes place on the final day of the trek. On the Short Inca Trail, travelers pass through Intipunku after hiking from Km 104, following the itinerary organized for that date.

Arriving through Intipunku is part of the trail experience, but the visit inside Machu Picchu must continue along the route indicated on the ticket.

Which circuit applies to the Inca Trail?

Since November 2025, regulations establish that visitors arriving from the Inca Trail Network may access Route 3-B, which corresponds to Circuit 3 or the Royalty Circuit.

The Ministry of Culture provides a limited number of daily spaces for these visitors. Authorized agencies must book them in advance, respecting the permitted capacity for Machu Picchu.

Therefore, it would not be accurate to say that hikers have an independent circuit or that they can choose any route upon arrival. The included visit corresponds to Route 3-B, unless the Ministry of Culture later publishes a modification.

How do schedules work?

Entry to Machu Picchu has an assigned time. Although the time is organized according to the trekking itinerary, it does not depend solely on the group’s pace.

The agency must reserve a time compatible with the hikers’ expected arrival. The valid time is the one shown on the entry ticket and must be followed during the visit. The Ministry of Culture states that entry to each circuit takes place at the time indicated on the ticket.

For this reason, it is not advisable to publish an exact time that applies to all travelers. The schedule may vary depending on:

  • The Inca Trail option.
  • The trekking date.
  • Available spaces.
  • The schedule confirmed by the agency.
  • Trail operating conditions.

Schedule on the Classic Inca Trail

On the four-day Classic Inca Trail, travelers arrive at Machu Picchu during the final day.

Generally, the group starts hiking early to head toward Intipunku and continue to Machu Picchu. However, the exact entry time must be confirmed on the ticket arranged by the agency.

Not all groups necessarily enter at the same time, even if they follow the same program.

Schedule on the Short Inca Trail

On the Short Inca Trail, travelers begin the hike at Km 104 and continue through Chachabamba, Wiñay Wayna, and Intipunku.

The schedule can organize the panoramic arrival and the internal visit according to the reserved time. Therefore, before starting the trek, the agency must clearly inform travelers when the corresponding entry to Machu Picchu will take place.

The schedule should not be assumed or chosen directly upon arrival: it is established during the booking process.

Differences between the Classic and Short Inca Trail

Both the Classic Inca Trail and the Short Inca Trail include the arrangement of entry to Machu Picchu and arrival on foot through Intipunku.

The main difference is the time of arrival:

  • On the Classic Inca Trail, Machu Picchu is visited at the end of a multi-day trek.
  • On the Short Inca Trail, travelers reach Intipunku after starting the trek at Km 104.

In both cases, the circuit and schedule depend on the ticket reserved by the agency.
