When to Buy the Inca Trail

Buying the Inca Trail means paying the deposit so your permit can be registered in your name. The right time to do it is when you already have a start date, your passport is ready, and your spot is confirmed. Writing down a date or asking whether there is availability does not secure anything: until payment is made and the permit is registered, that date remains available for someone else.

What “buying” means for this trek

Buying means making it official: passport details plus deposit plus permit registration. Choosing a date or checking availability does not reserve your spot.

What you cannot do after buying

Once the permit is registered, that payment is non-refundable. Entry to the Inca Trail is issued in your name and for that date. There is no permit refund if you cancel, change your plans, or do not travel.

It is also non-transferable. It cannot be passed to another traveler or moved to another day. That is why you should buy it when both the date and document are already decided, not as a deposit that can later be reassigned.

When you should buy

When you already have the trek start date, the passport you will travel with, and confirmation that there is availability that day. With those three things, pay. Waiting for flights to get cheaper or “to see later” usually closes off the date, not the price.

In May, June, July, and August, that time comes quickly: permits for the following year usually open between October and November, and those departures fill up first. During the rest of the year, you should also buy when the date is available; the daily limit does not increase just because fewer people are asking. You cannot buy for February: the trail closes for maintenance.

What to buy first: the trek or flights

The trek first. You cannot create a date without a permit. A plane seat can be changed. If you buy flights first, you are tied to a date that may have no availability.

When you should not buy yet

If your passport is going to be renewed and you do not yet have the new number, if your group is not finalized, or if you cannot set either a start date or a backup date. The permit is linked to a document and a date; it cannot be transferred to another person or moved to another day once issued.

Do not pay for a date just in case if it does not fit your trip. Check two or three nearby dates and buy the one you will actually use.

The day you decide to buy

Confirm availability, send your passport exactly as printed, and pay the deposit so they can register the permit. How each step works is explained in how to book the Inca Trail step by step. How many months in advance to book depending on the season is covered in how far in advance to book.
