The Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the best option if you want to hike along the original Inca Trail route without committing to a four-day trek. In a single day, you will walk approximately 12 kilometers along stone paths, visit archaeological sites that can only be accessed through this route, and arrive at Machu Picchu through Intipunku, the Sun Gate, the ancient entrance used by the Incas.

The day begins with a transfer from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley and private transportation to the Ollantaytambo train station. From there, you will board the train to km 104, the point where the hike begins. This section of the route is at a lower altitude than Cusco, with an average temperature of 23 °C, providing a more comfortable hike with less impact from altitude.

During the hike, you will pass through Chachabamba, an Inca ceremonial site located near the river, and reach Wiñay Wayna, one of the most impressive archaeological complexes along the Inca Trail, featuring agricultural terraces, water fountains, and well-preserved stone structures. The hike ends at Intipunku, where you will enjoy your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu from the mountain.

Machu Picchu welcomes visitors from around the world, but only a small number arrive by walking the original Inca Trail route. This tour with private service provides an exclusive guide for your group, greater flexibility during the hike, and the freedom to enjoy each stop at your own pace, without depending on a group of strangers.

Itinerary of the Camino Inca to Machu Picchu 2 Days with Camping

Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Inti Punku (Sun Gate) – Machu Picchu – Puente Ruinas (Camp)

The journey begins very early with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco. At the scheduled time, our tourist transportation will take you for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to the Ollantaytambo train station.

At Ollantaytambo, we will board the train heading to km 104, the starting point of the Short Inca Trail. During the journey, we will observe the Urubamba River, agricultural fields, Andean mountains, and, if weather conditions are favorable, the Veronica Mountain, located at approximately 5,800 m above sea level.

After approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes by train, we will arrive at km 104. At the checkpoint, your passport, Inca Trail permit, and entrance ticket will be verified. For this reason, it is essential to bring the original document used when making the reservation.

Visit to the Chachabamba Archaeological Site

The hike begins with a visit to the Chachabamba archaeological site, located at approximately 2,100 m above sea level. Our professional guide will explain the historical and ceremonial importance of this Inca complex.

Chachabamba stands out for its stone structures, water channels, and spaces that were likely used by travelers before continuing towards Machu Picchu.

After the visit, we will begin a gradual ascent of approximately three hours. During the journey, we will walk along ancient Inca paths surrounded by vegetation, mountains, and small waterfalls.

Hike to Wiñay Wayna

After the ascent, we will reach the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, located at approximately 2,600 m above sea level. Its name in Quechua means “Forever Young” and it is considered one of the most impressive archaeological complexes along the Inca Trail.

Wiñay Wayna is composed of agricultural terraces, stone stairways, ceremonial areas, and water fountains distributed along the mountainside. From different viewpoints of the site, you can enjoy excellent views of the valley and the cloud forest.

The guide will explain the main characteristics of its architecture and the possible function this place had during the Inca period.

A few minutes from Wiñay Wayna is the designated rest and dining area. Here, we will take a break to enjoy lunch, regain energy, and prepare for the final section of the hike.

Arrival at Inti Punku or Sun Gate

After lunch, we will continue hiking for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes towards Inti Punku. This section crosses a cloud forest area with abundant vegetation, ferns, and natural landscapes characteristic of the sanctuary.

Before reaching the Sun Gate, we will find a section of approximately 50 stone steps with a steep incline. The ascent is done calmly while following the guide’s instructions.

Finally, we will arrive at Inti Punku, known as the Sun Gate, located at approximately 2,719 m above sea level. From this ancient Inca entrance, you will enjoy the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu.

This moment is one of the most special parts of the Short Inca Trail, as it allows you to admire the citadel from the same route used by ancient Inca travelers.

Descent to Machu Picchu

From Inti Punku, we will begin a descent of approximately 40 minutes to the Machu Picchu archaeological complex. Arrival is scheduled around 3:30 p.m., although the time may vary depending on the group’s pace and trail conditions.

Upon arrival, we will have time to appreciate the landscape, take photographs, and enjoy the first view of the Inca city. The main guided tour will take place the following day.

Afterwards, we will take the bus down. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes and will take us to the Puente Ruinas area, located in the Urubamba River valley, at approximately 1,900 m above sea level.

Camping at Puente Ruinas

Upon arrival at the campsite, the tents will be installed and prepared by our team. We will provide a tea time with hot drinks and snacks to recover energy after the hike.

Later, we will enjoy dinner prepared by our cook. During dinner, the guide will explain the program for the second day, departure times, and recommendations for the Machu Picchu visit.

We recommend organizing your backpack and resting early, as the following day begins early in the morning.

At approximately 5:00 a.m., we will begin the walk towards Machu Picchu. The ascent takes around 50 minutes and allows us to arrive at the archaeological site before a large part of the visitors coming from Cusco and Ollantaytambo.

Leaving early also offers the possibility of watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu, as long as weather conditions and visibility allow it.

Guided Visit to Machu Picchu

Upon arriving at Machu Picchu, we will begin an approximately two-hour guided tour. Our professional guide will explain the history of the Inca city, the characteristics of its architecture, and the function of its main sectors.

During the tour, we will visit some of the most representative areas of Machu Picchu, according to the circuit assigned on the entrance ticket. The exact route will depend on the regulations established by the sanctuary authorities.

After the guided tour, additional time inside Machu Picchu will depend on the schedule, the reserved circuit, and the current entrance regulations.

Travelers who wish to enjoy an additional hike can request entrance to Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain.

These tickets are optional, have an additional cost, and have limited availability. Therefore, it is recommended to reserve them several months in advance, especially during the high season.

Availability for these mountains is not guaranteed and depends on the reservation date and the spaces offered by the authorities.

Descent to Aguas Calientes Town

After completing the visit, we will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes town. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes.

Upon arrival, we will enjoy the included lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards, you will have free time to explore the town, buy souvenirs, or rest before heading to the train station.

Return to Ollantaytambo and Cusco

In the afternoon, we will board the return train to Ollantaytambo. Depending on availability, the departure may be scheduled approximately at 4:20 p.m. or 6:20 p.m.

The train journey takes around two hours. Upon arrival at the Ollantaytambo station, our tourist transportation will be waiting to take us back to the city of Cusco.

Perfect Trip: Hikes and Relaxing Time This was an incredible experience. Each hike always had an amazing ending, in terms of views and in terms of places to stay. Our guide (Herbert) is a fantastic person and would recommended him with my eyes closed. He was always looking out for us and making sure everything was smooth and ready. This trip is the perfect balance between challenging hikes and relaxing time. Peruvians are one of the best people I’ve met and made our trip memorable. The food, traditional and fantastic. I would recommend to make the reservation with at least two months in advance, so that the reservations (restaurants, hotels, and transportation) are all ready and aligned. We did the reservation with three months and it was perfect.

Great trek, thanks Hector! We had an amazing track alongside Pat towards Machu Picchu. The scenery was amazing as was the food, but the experience was made a lot better by our guide Hector and the team at IPT. While the track was difficult at times Hector was very accommodating and encouraging. Hector provided lots of information about the Incas and his passion for the history was great to experience. Highly recommend this trek!!

Excelente experiencia.!!!

I heartily suggest Incredible Peru Tours. Using Incredible Peru Tours, my companion and I reserved two tours: Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Prior to making a reservation, we discovered that they were really organised and helpful. Every little detail was meticulously handled by Fredy, and communication with him was a breeze. Considering everything we did, both excursions were excellent and incredibly affordable. Luis, our guide, is incredibly kind and informed. Since our time in Cusco is extended, we will most likely do another tour with this company. To anyone travelling to this stunning nation, I heartily suggest Incredible Peru Tours.
